Week 7

Announcements:


Online Grades: Our online grade system is now up and running. Please log in to your family Compass account to check how your daughter is doing. 

Spalding: We use a programs called the Spalding Method to teach literacy skills at Canyon Grove.  I found a webpage that explains what the students learn during this time.  You can read about it here.


Box Tops for Education
Box Tops Contest: Our school will be having a school wide box tops conest starting September 30th.  The class who brings in the most box tops gets a smoothie party.  Help our class win by sending in your box tops starting September 30th. 

Math Test: We will have a math test of addition and subtraction equations this Wednesday.  There will be no math homework on Wednesday due to the test.

What we are learning this week:

 

Literacy: We will continue to practice the Spalding Phonograms.  We will also learn more about nouns and the subjects of sentences. We will learn about the purpose of informative writing. 


Math: Addition and subtractions equations.  We will have a math test on Wednesday so there will be no homework on Wednesday. 


Science: We will now be having science during our rotation time on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  We will be learning science from Mrs. Pili the second grade teacher. 

Social Studies: We will finish our unit on self esteem and start learning about symbols of our country and community. 

Health: We will learn about objects that can harm us and how to report these objects to a trustworthy adult.

Box Tops for Education
Box Tops Contest: Our school will be having a school wide box tops conest starting September 30th.  The class who brings in the most box tops gets a smoothie party.  Help our class win by sending in your box tops starting September 30th. 

Shoparoo: This year we have partnered with Shoparoo for their hassle-free approach to raising thousands of dollars for Canyon Grove Academy. With the free Shoparoo app, all you have to do in order to raise money for our school is take pictures of your grocery receipts with your phone! Shoparoo does not require any buying, selling, collecting, delivering, etc…and, it works no matter where you shop or what you buy!Yes, it really is that easy. Our school receives a donation for every grocery receipt picture taken through the free Shoparoo app. There is no limit to how much we can raise with Shoparoo, so please download the app and get started taking pictures today.

1. Download the free Shoparoo app from the Apple App
Store or Google Play Store.

2. Once it’s downloaded, select our school as your cause
and take pictures of receipts!

3. Invite other parents and members of the community to
participate in this simple fundraiser.
If you don’t have a smart phone or ipad, you can drop
your receipts off at the school and we would be more
than happy to add them to the school totals


What we are learning this week:

 

Literacy: We will continue practicing our Spalding Phonograms. During writing we will work on writing complete sentences.  We will also learn about rhyming words and practice identifying nouns in sentences. 

Science: We will now be having science during our rotation time on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  We will be learning science from Mrs. Pili the second grade teacher. 

Social Studies: Self Esteem

September Field Trip: The first graders are very excited to have our first field
 trip! We will be staying at the school for this first field trip. We will be visited by the BYU Bean Museum Live Animal Show! This show  will be on September 19th at 12:30. 
 

What we are learning this week:

 

Literacy: We will continue practicing our Spalding Phonograms. During writing we will work on writing complete sentences.  We will be learning to identify the subject and the "action word" in a sentence. The girls are also working hard in their guided reading groups.  The girls are grouped by reading level for these groups so that they are not reading books that are too hard or too easy!

Math: We will learn the addition strategy of "counting on."  We will begin learning subtraction strategies on Friday. 

Science: We will learn about the continents and oceans.

Social Studies: Differences in communities around the world. 

Health: Healthy Eating: eating "green light" foods.

Week 4

I can't believe it is already the 4th week of school!  The girls have been working very hard at learning.  They are doing a great job.

What we are learning this week:

 

Literacy: We will continue to talk about narrative text structure and practice the Spalding Phonograms (phonics). We have practiced our centers routine for the past few weeks.  The girls have become skilled at working independently during centers time so we will start our small reading groups this week. 

Math: Addition strategies. 

Science: We will finish up our science unit on oceans. 

Social Studies: Differences in communities around the world. 

Health: Healthy Eating: choosing foods in balance

Week 3

Week 3 September 2-6th

I hope you all have a great Labor Day!  Your girls deserve a break from all the hard work they have been doing at school. 

Announcements:

Math Test: We have our first math test this week.  We will have our first math test on Friday this week.  Because we will  be reviewing for our test in class on Thursday, there will be no math homework on Thursday. 


Class Party: The girls earned a class party for good behavior last week.  They earn a puzzle piece every time the class is following directions.  When they complete the puzzle they get to vote on a fun activity for the class to do.  The girls voted to have a "coloring party" so we will be spending a few minutes on Tuesday completing some coloring pages. 

 Picture Day: Picture day is Friday, September 6th.  Please ensure that your child is in uniform.

Literacy: We will talk about narrative text and practice segmenting and blending words .  We will also continue to practice our literacy centers this week.
