Week 34

No Homework- To allow me to have grades submitted on time there will be no homework packets sent home for the remainder of the school year.  We will still have a spelling test this week so please take the extra time to practice our spelling words. 

Last Day of School: -The last day of school is May 30th. 

No School on Memorial Day: There is no school on Monday, May 26th.

Space Center Field Trip- We will be visiting the discovery space center on Thursday May 29th.  To get a preview of a space center that will be built in our school next year. 

Summer Birthdays:  We will be celebrating the birthdays of students who have summer birthdays as we have time during the last few weeks of school.  We will sing to each child and they will recieve a card and birthday pencil.  Remember, school policy is no treats for birthdays. 

Class Store: We will have a class store on May 23rd for the end of the year.  Please see the email and family letter I sent home previously for more information. 


Literacy: We will continue to practice the Spalding Phonograms. We will work on writing informational sentences and paragraphs. 


Math: We will continue to learn about money and reviewing concepts wer learned earlier in the year.


Science: We will be having science with Mrs. Pili

Social Studies:  We will review concepts learned earlier in the year.

Week 33

Week 32

Discovery Space Center Coming to 

Canyon Grove Academy in the Fall of 2014 


Challenger Space SimulatorThroughout the school year our students will have the opportunity to attend 7 missions appropriate for their grade level at our very own Discovery Space Center on campus. This unique experience combines the fun of exploration and learning with a simulated futuristic adventure story. Crew members are faced with intergalactic challenges that they must solve using teamwork and strategy. Students become engulfed in an exciting experience where they get to step into the shoes of futuristic astronauts and explorers. This experience is guaranteed to be one that will last a lifetime. It is an exciting way to learn, explore and play.

Week 30

Earth Day- 

April 22 – Students will be taking time out of their day to beautify our campus. Students may wear modest street clothes to school this day. Students are also encouraged to bring work gloves (please mark them with your family name), brooms, rakes,and hand tools to weed and clean our grounds!

We are looking for any donations to help us with our efforts. Some of the items we are seeking are listed below. 
Paper towels Glass cleaner Clorox Wipes Mr. Clean Magic Erasers

Week 29

No School April 7-11th for Spring Break


Think Time Reward: Friday, April 18 
from 5-9pm at Classic Skate in Orem. Qualifying students and their families are invited to join us for free skating. Other actvities are available for purchase. Parents will be emailed if their child did not qualify by Wednesday, April 16th.

Walkathon- Friday April 18th from 1:45-2:45. We will be walking around Manilla Pond. Your child has recieved a donation envelope and all donations they collect will go to support Canyon Grove Academy's computer lab. Donations are due to your teacher by April 14th. Prizes will be given for the top three earning students and there will be an ice cream party for the top earning class.

Week 28

Change to Homework: As we near the end of the school year, I will be making a slight change to the way I assign homework.  We have completed the content in the first grade core standards for math and we have reached the end of our math curriculumn.  As such, there is no longer homework sheets from our current math book to send home.  For the rest of the school year we will be focusing on reiewing concepts we have already studied as well as begining to cover some of the second grade math curriculum to prepare the girls for next year. For homework I will be sending home a weekly packet on Mondays that will be due on Fridays. These packets will consist of sheets that review concepts we hae previously studied as well as sheets that cover new concepts we will be learning.  They will cover both literacy and math concepts. The packets will contain the about the same amount of weekly homework as the girls have been given earlier this year. 

Supply Donations: As the school year progresses, we are using up many of our supplies from the beginning of the year. If you are able, our class needs donations of the following items:

1. Lysol Disinfectant Spray (or store brand disinfectant spray)
2. Hand Sanitizer (in a pump bottle)
3. Fine Tip Dry Erase Markers
4 Construction Paper

Spring Break: Spring break is coming up on April 7-11.

Week 26

A Note About Math:  As we are studying 2 digit addition over the next few weeks, we will be learning a variety of ways to approach 2-digit problems.  Students will be able to choose which addition strategy is easiest for them and use it to solve problems.  They will not be graded on how they solve the problems only on if they are able to find a correct answer. Below is a copy of the family letter that was sent home last week that explains the various methods we will be covering.

Week 23


1. No homework for the rest of the week while we review some important math concepts in class. Enjoy your break.

2. Parent Teacher Conferences- Parent Teacher Conferences will be on February 25th and 26th.You can begin signing up for appointments on Tuesday January 21st.  Please sign up for an appointment so I have time left in my schedule to meet with you!

3. Book Fair!- There will be a Scholastic Book Fair at our school during parent teacher conferences. Make sure to check it out in the library. 

4. Volunteering in the Classroom: If you would like to volunteer in the classroom please email me to set up a time.  The best time for volunteers to come is from 8:30-11:30.
